The Scared and the Practical, digital prints on canvas and fabric with toned cyanotype hand sewn with crochet, approx. 6x4’, 2022.

Using more than one of my grandmothers’ works as the source material and inspiration, this textile photographic installation explores how the women in my family approached their craft. This piece references craft from different sides of women in my family. Scrap quilts and crocheted tablecloths for the Sabbath are the predominant textiles that are passed down.

Images of flowers are seen throughout the work, inspired by their embroidery, stitching, and use of fabric. The piece consists of small pieces of scraps stitched together. It relies more on the material available than conforming to a known quilt pattern. The meticulous, detailed crochet contrasts with the scrap quilt, demonstrating the range of approaches to craft within a family.
