Generational Bitmap Series, Cyanotype and Gouache on laser cut canvas, 9x12’’, 2023.
This mixed media series explores changing symbols and iconography in clothing and accessories handed down from multiple generations of women. Using hand-me-down denim, a neutral and universal fabric, as a background, these abstract portraits experiment with how one presents themselves through clothing, textiles, and symbols. Referencing digital distortion through painting, the pixelated symbols represent the distortion of memories through passed-down objects.
The base of each work is painted on cyanotype, each manipulated in the exposure process. These blurred denim backdrops, with various tones and brushstrokes, highlight the fuzz of memory. Throughout my work, I use photography and experimental darkroom methods to produce manipulated images and exposures. I am interested in how the manipulations of images can demonstrate the passage of time.
